JEWELRY - Even newly pierced ears

AYSO's national policy prohibits players from wearing any jewelry during practices or games. This includes earrings, body piercings, and any hard replacement studs. Covering jewelry with tape, padding, or bandages is not sufficient; it must be removed. Medical alert bracelets are allowed, but they must be covered with a soft, snug-fitting material.
The primary reason for this policy is player safety. Collisions with the ball or other players can cause injuries with jewelry.

  • FIFA Law 4:
AYSO's policy aligns with FIFA Law 4, which states that players must not wear anything that is dangerous to themselves or other players.
  • No Exceptions (except Medical Alert - SEE BELOW):
There are no exceptions to the jewelry policy, regardless of the type of jewelry. Even if a player has new ear piercings, the earrings must be removed for participation, according to the American Youth Soccer Organization
  • Exceptions for Medical Alert Jewelry - Medical alert bracelets are permitted, but they must be covered with a soft, snug-fitting material, to prevent them from catching on or being a source of injury, says

CASTS &  SPLINTS -

AYSO National Rules & Regulations paragraph VI.E. states: “Team members shall not be allowed to practice or participate in any match with any type of cast or splint.”

May a player remove a cast or splint in order to participate?
AYSO National Rules & Regulations paragraph VI.E. states: “Removal of any type of cast or splint at the field or surrounding area in order to participate shall disqualify the team member from practice or match participation.”
* Removable casts are designed to facilitate personal hygiene and dressing; they are not meant to be removed so that a player may engage in contact sports.

GLASSES
Players who require prescription glasses are to be allowed to wear them during practices and games.  For the greatest safety, retaining straps should be worn or rubber bands may be used for this purpose.  Prescription goggles, such as the type used by racquetball players, are also permitted subject to the approval of the Referee prior to the start of the match.  Spectacle guards made of plastic or other hard material are not permitted.
