6U Boys / Girls

The AYSO 6U program is a fundamental, introductory soccer program designed for young players ages 5 or tuning 5. It focuses on fun and learning through short-sided games and emphasizes player development with a focus on technical skills and creating a positive, supportive environment.

  • Gameplay: Short-sided games, typically 3v3 or 4v4, with no goalkeepers.
    • In one Region 239, the 6U activity day includes a 20-minute technical development session followed by a 4v4 game with another team, for a total of 60 minutes.
    • AYSO Region 418 uses professional trainers to support volunteer coaches, with games played 3v3.
  • Rosters: Smaller rosters, NO MORE than 6 players per team, to ensure everyone gets ample playing time.
  • Equipment: Players need soccer cleats, shin guards, and a size 3 soccer ball.
  • Practice/Games: Weekly games, usually on Saturdays.
    • (1x / week PRACTICES ARE OPTIONAL & are at the discretion of the Coach Volunteering)
  • Emphasis: Focus on skill development, positive coaching, and the "Everyone Plays" philosophy.
  • No Standings: No standings or playoffs to focus on fun and participation.
  • Volunteers: AYSO relies heavily on volunteers for coaching and game management.
  • Uniform: AYSO provides a uniform (jersey, shorts, socks).
  • AYSO Philosophies: The 6U program is built on AYSO's Six Philosophies: Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development.
