If interested you must become a registered volunteer in BlueSombrero. Have taken the on-line Regional Referee course in (AYSOU) which you will use your Blue Sombrero (User ID and Password) for access. This is a requirement prior to taking the face to face Companion Course. Before referee training is complete the  On-Line Safe Haven and On-Line CDC Concussion Awareness courses must also be completed. These can be done after the face to face course. See below for instructions on volunteering in BlueSombrero and On-line courses.

Volunteering & On-line Courses!

This is a companion course to the on-line training that can be done on your own time frame.  The course will include checking for learning, question/answer/comment, some field work for signals and basic referee mechanics, and the test.  Attendees that have not taken the prerequisite on-line training will not be admitted.

AYSO Region 87 is utilizing electronic signature (e-signature) for processing all of our players and volunteers and computers are set up at the walk-in registrations to help those without computer access for volunteer and player registration on-line.  If you are signing up on your own, please go the BLUE SOMBRERO Region 87 Registration Site and sign up as a volunteer.

REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST RE-APPLY AS A VOLUNTEER EACH AND EVERY YEAR FOR AYSO.  YOUR APPLICATION IS REVIEWED EVERY YEAR FOR SAFE HAVEN BACKGROUND CHECKS.  (Returning Volunteer applications only take 5 minutes to verify your information and answer the key question)

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 HAVE A DIFFERENT FORM THAN ADULTS, BUT MUST FILE THE ADULT FORM WHEN THE YOUTH TURNS 18 (they stop being a youth volunteer on their 18th birthday and must re-file as an adult to continue volunteering)

New Volunteer-  You are classified as a New Volunteer if you did not register in the prior years.

Continuing Volunteer-  You are classified as a continuing volunteer if you had volunteered in previous years.

Once you are a 'Registered Volunteer' you can go do the ONLINE Basic Referee Training Course and you will need your AYSO ID Number to do training.

To take the ONLINE Basic Referee Training Course go to:  AYSOTRAINING.ORG and put in your last name and your eAYSO ID number.  There you can take the Basic Referee Course and the Required Safe Haven Course... (and the highly recommended concussion course)

Once you have completed the online courses, you will need to take the 'in person' companion portion of the course.  This is a couple hour course that we teach in-region to help equip and aquaint you with the laws and help you become comfortable with the role.

We will close the evening out with a quick knowledge review and you will be a newly minted Regional Referee....  and be ready to take on the U8/U10 games with mentor support.

Why Become a Referee?

Why should you become an AYSO Referee? We need you. We can't have games without referees. More importantly, it's rewarding and working with kids is great fun!

Referees are critical to soccer - the game can't be played without them. The referee's job is to be the official in charge of the game. He is the independent arbiter and manager of the game. Her authority extends to everyone at the field, including players, substitutes, team officials, spectators, and even assistant referees.

The referee's No. 1 one concern is to keep the game as safe as possible for the players. While there is risk in all sports, the referee is responsible for minimizing such risks from field conditions, equipment, spectators, and the players.

The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game safe, fair and fun for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators and themselves. He interferes with the game as little as possible, avoiding making calls for doubtful and trifling offenses. Referees only make calls for offenses they are sure occurred.

We want our kids to continue to play, and they keep playing as long as it is fun. Referees learn that fun soccer varies from age group to age group of players.
